Grandfather Clock by 'Thomas Gilbert of Rugeley.' (SOLD)

£695.00

This is an interesting, beautifully presented 30-hour clock: The Gilbert family worked as clock makers from 1828-1870s. However, the movement dates from 1700-1750.

Information pinned to the inside of the trunk door suggests Thomas Gilbert may have replaced the original brass dial with one of his own enamel ones. Certainly painted dials were becoming very fashionable towards the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The painted dial has a pear as its central emblem and floral spandrels. It has a working date aperture.

The movement works well and keeps good time. It is rope driven, the rope being in good condition.

The hood and case are in good condition and have a beautiful rich patina.

The hood has a broken arch pediment with a small central brass finial. It is supported on fluted wooden columns with brass cappings. The wood is oak and mahogany, with what appears to be ebony and boxwood stringing.

The trunk is predominantly oak with some mahogany veneer and ebony and boxwood stringing. It has quarter fluted columns with brass cappings The door has a lock and key (not original).

H = 82” W = 19” D = 9.5”

Our verdict..."Overall, a lovely neat and petite longcase clock; Both lovingly kept and an ideal clock for a cottage or smaller home."
