Grandfather Clock by 'John Wyke of Liverpool', 8-Day. (SOLD)

£1,250.00

‘An 8-day, 13” brass-faced clock, housed in a beautiful mahogany case. Made by the famous Liverpudlian Clockmaker ‘John Wyke,’ in the late 18th Century. The original case is of the finest flame mahoganies in the best Liverpool 'Chippendale' tradition of the day.’

The face has silvered chapter ring, seconds dial, moon-phase chapter ring and maker’s nameplate. The moon dial has brass orbs, with the maker’s name above. It has Roman and Arabic numerals, and brass female head mask spandrels. It also has a working date aperture.

The movement is of good quality and is clean. It strikes the hour on a bell.

The hood has three wooden finials and is supported on tapered wooden columns. The trunk is almost unmarked except for a historic horizontal mark to thebase (which has been restored) and is in highly-polished mahogany. It has quarter-turned pillars and a full-length door (which has a working lock and key, and an escutcheon).

The door is in a stunning flame mahogany with matching butterfly veneer - as is the trunk.

All-in-all a beautifully kept longcase clock with a well-aged patina.

John Wyke, who was born around 1720, was a famous Liverpool clockmaker recorded as working from approximately 1760 until his death in 1787. He worked alone initially, then was a partner with his brother-in-law Thomas Green from 1772 until 1781. John is particularly noted for his eight day moon phase clocks of which this is one.
