Grandfather Clock by John Kent of Manchester, 8-day. (SOLD)

£875.00

JOHN KENT of MANCHESTER  c. 1804

This is a lovely mahogany-cased clock by a listed and respected clock maker working in Salford in c.1804.

It is an 8-day painted dial clock, striking on the hour to a bell.

The unusual painted face appears to have been  distressed by the original artist. The spandrels are of ladies depicting the four seasons, whilst the centre portrays two lovers seated at a spinning wheel in front of a cottage. Above the face is a moon dial with pastoral scenes of a couple by a lake .

The dial has brass hands, a seconds dial, and - unusually - a date hand pointing to the chapter ring. The dial has Roman and Arabic numerals. The maker’s name is just distinguishable.

The movement is clean and in excellent working order. It keeps good time.

The mahogany hood has  oblong columns  with stringing and fine marquetry, and three brass finials.

The mahogany case has an excellent patina and is in good condition with just the one piece of restoration being evident. It has marquetry and stringing. The gothic door is in beautiful flame mahogany and comes with lock and key.

The base has ogee feet.
