Longcase clock by ‘Samual Maplin of Salop,’ 8-Day. (SOLD)
This is a good quality, late 18th century 8-day clock in a rich oak case.
The movement is weighty and keeps good time. It has a seconds dial and a working date wheel.
The enamel dial is painted white and has Roman numerals. The painting to the arch is of fine quality and depicts a pastoral scene.
The arched hood has a partial glass frieze. It is supported by wooden fluted columns with brass cappings. The glass to the door may well be original.
The trunk is heavy and has a well-aged patina. The full-length door has a shaped top and a working lock and key which, again, appears to be original. Fluted quarter pillars with brass cappings support the trunk sides.
All-in-all, this is a beautifully presented and well maintained clock. One of the nicest examples we’ve seen.
Samuel Maplin of Salop is recorded: "Shrewsbury, 1766 - 1799”.
He became Mayor in 1784, and Burgess in 1795." Also known as a goldsmith.
