HENRY PIDDUCK OF HANLEY (STOKE) c. 1850

This is an imposing carved oak 8-day longcase clock by well-known clock makers.

The 30cm brass face has a silvered chapter ring with Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals. It has a silvered subsidiary seconds dial. The arched top is inscribed “Tempus Fugit” whilst the bottom is inscribed with the maker’s name. There is some wear to the silvering.

What is unusual is the hours are struck on a gong rather than a bell.

The movement is in excellent original condition, and keeps perfect time.

The hood has a swan neck pediment, and the whole case is carved in the 17th century style. The trunk door has a lock and key.

Henry Pidduck and Sons - goldsmiths and clock makers - was founded 1841 in Market Square, Hanley. The company is still trading. Henry was mayor of Hanley in 1864. The business made all their own movements, including those in Stoke Minster clock + Pidduck Clock in Hanley (now gone). Pidduck had a contract to wind up all the city’s municipal clocks.
